Truth of God

Joshua 11:16-23

Thus Joshua took all this land, the mountain country, all the South, all the land of Goshen, the lowland, and the Jordan plain – the mountains of Israel and its lowlands, from Mount Halak and the ascent of Seir, even as far as Baal Gad in the Valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon.  He captured all their kings, and struck them down and killed them. Joshua made war a long time with all those kings. There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, except the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon.  All the others they took in battle. For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that He might utterly destroy them, and that they might receive no mercy, but that He might destroy them as the LORD had commanded Moses.

And at that time Joshua came and cut off the Anakim from the mountains; from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel; Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities.  None of the Anakim were left in the land of the children of Israel; they remained only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod.

So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD had said to Moses; and Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to their divisions by their tribes.  Then the land rested from war.

Isaiah 53:7-9

He was oppressed and He was afflicted.

Yet He opened not His mouth;

He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,

And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,

So He opened not His mouth.

He was taken from prison and from judgement,

And who will declare His generation?

For He was cut off from the land of the living;

For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.

And they made His grave with the wicked –

But with the rich at His death,

Because He had done no violence,

Nor was any deceit in His mouth.

Acts 18:18-28

So Paul still remained a good while, Then he took leave of the brethren and sailed for Syria, and Priscilla and Aquila were with him.  He had his hair cut off at Cenchrea, for he had taken a vow.  And he came to Ephesus, and left them there; but he himself entered the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews.  When they asked him to stay a longer time with them, he did not consent, but took leave of them, saying, “I must by all means keep this coming feast in Jerusalem; but I will return again to you, God willing.”  And he sailed from Ephesus.

And when he had landed at Caesarea, and gone up and greeted the church, he went down to Antioch.  After he had spent some time there, he departed and went over the region of Galatia and Phrygia in order, strengthening all the disciples.

Now a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man and mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus.  This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John.  So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue.  When Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.  And when he desired to cross to Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him; and when he arrived, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace; for he vigorously refuted the Jews publicly, showing from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ.

Our Prayer

Father God, Your Word is the truth revealing Your nature and our need for a perfect sacrifice to cover our sins.  Thank You for sending Jesus, who was oppressed, afflicted, led as a lamb to the slaughter for the transgressions of Your people for He had done no violence, nor was any deceit in His mouth.  Thank You for softening our hearts that we may receive mercy and follow Your commands leading to the destruction of wickedness and rest from war.  Use us to instruct in the way of the Lord and fervent in the Holy Spirit to speak and teach accurately the things of You.  As we need strengthening, bring others beside us to explain the way of God more accurately. Use us to encourage and exhort Your people to believe through grace from Your Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ. Amen
